Odile Decoret, Research Scientist - “In recent years, chemists have turned their attention to greener processes to reimagine the practice of chemistry for a more sustainable future. Being part of the MicroCycle team is a way to apply this principle: Downscaling chemistry is not only impacting medicinal chemistry projects, it also produces fewer waste.”25 April 2021

Yves Steffen - Head Device & Packaging Commercialization BTD: “The goal is clear – we want to make medicines for patients. For each step of the process we have to think how we can make medicines greener. This starts in discovery chemistry, for example, by smart choice of reagents and solvents, smaller scale, and less waste generation.”24 September 2020

Renewable energy: Although the use of renewable energy has been on the rise over the past few years, energy from wind, water and solar are still dwarfed by fossil fuels. However, new forms of financing such as virtual power purchase agreements, or VPPAs, through which companies support the construction of renewable energy facilities, are injecting new momentum into the field. Novartis has been at the forefront of this development, having done a VPPA deal in the United States, which has helped the company decarbonize its local operations. More deals are to follow.21 September 2020
